about

Captain Swing was a hard-working tenant farmer driven to destitution and despair by social and political change in the early nineteenth century. Captain Swing was also the name that signed some of the threatening letters during the rural English Swing Riots of 1830, when laborers rioted over the introduction of new threshing machines and the loss of their livelihoods.

"Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose"
(The more it changes, the more it's the same thing)

lyrics

Captain Swing is coming here
He's traveling south from Lancashire
To crush the new machinery
That's ruining all the scenery
He says he'll bring his army here
With sticks and stones and riot gear
To rush the walls of industry
They won't cut down another tree

Captain Swing we need you now
No one else can save this town
Captain swing your hammer down
Run those gangsters out of town

Captain Swing is getting near
So raise your voices and pints of beer
He's tearing down the factory
And rearranging history
He says he'll bring his army here
With sticks and stones and riot gear
To rush the walls of industry
They won't cut down another tree

Captain Swing we need you now
No one else can save this town
Captain swing your hammer down
Run those gangsters out of town

Captain Swing we need you now
No one else can save this town
Captain swing your hammer down
Run those gangsters out of town

Captain Swing we need you now
